Ingredients
  

  • For Cookies:
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp almond extract optional
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt

For Royal Icing:

  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp meringue powder
  • 5 tbsp warm water
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • Pink/red food coloring
  • Sprinkles

Instructions
 

  • Make Dough: Cream butter + sugar. Add egg + extracts. Mix dry ingredients; combine with wet. Chill 1-2 hours.
  • Roll & Cut: Roll dough to ¼-inch thickness. Cut hearts. Bake at 350°F for 8-10 mins. Cool.
  • Make Icing: Whisk powdered sugar, meringue powder, water, and extract. Color, then decorate!

Notes

  • Decorating: Let icing dry 2-3 hours before stacking.
  • Freezing: Dough freezes for 3 months; baked cookies freeze for 1 month.
